There is nothing more debilitating and frustrating than trying to navigate a day in life while chronic back issues are slowing one’s ability to move freely without pain. When someone finds themselves living with back pain issues, it’s not something they will want to endure if they want some quality of life. How are back pain issues best resolved?

If you are having chronic back pain issues that interfere with your ability to attend to your day-to-day activities, you have to make decisions. First, you have to decide if you are going to accept your plight or do something about it. If you decide you want to address your pain issues, you would then need to decide how you are going to go about doing that.

Back Pain Treatment Alternatives

Instead of simply trying to live life with back pain, you should really think about addressing your issues. You could do that by visiting your family physician. If you were to choose this path, your doctor might offer you pain medication and take some X-rays. If the X-rays come back indicating a significant structural problem or disease, your doctor could well recommend that you submit to back surgery.

Before you submit to surgery, you might want to get a second opinion. After all, surgery is awfully invasive while not offering guaranteed results. In fact, more than a few people have submitted to surgery only to find themselves getting very little relief. In some cases, surgery only leads to other issues down the road.

Perhaps, you might want to start addressing your back pain issues by visiting a local chiropractor. It’s quite possible that a few chiropractic treatments might be all that’s needed to relieve your pain. If that were the case, you would be able to avoid the risks and costs related to back surgery.

About Spinal Traction Therapy

One of the favorite chiropractic treatment options that chiropractors like to use when addressing a patient’s back pain is spinal traction therapy. This is a highly preferred option because it’s non-invasive, affordable, and effective under the right circumstances.

The theory behind spinal traction therapy is that the stretching or decompressing of the spine will separate and straighten vertebrae, which should release the tangled and pinched nerves that are causing pain.

The process is typically used to treat any of the following medical conditions that cause back pain:

  • Herniated or Ruptured Discs
  • Pain and numbness caused by pinched nerves that lead through the lower back and buttocks into the legs
  • Degenerative Disc Disease (narrowing of the spinal column
  • Pinched Nerves

The application of traction can be handled manually or mechanically. Manual spinal traction therapy is administered by a chiropractor who manually applies pressure to manipulate the spine in targeted areas.

Mechanical spinal traction therapy requires the use of a motorized decompression table that is equipped with devices/tools. The chiropractor will use these devices and tools to stretch the spinal column. The devices/tools used for this process typically include a series of ropes, slings, and pulleys that are strategically attached to the body in order to relieve pressure in targeted areas.

In some cases, patients will need to go through a few treatment procedures to get the results they desire. With that said, many patients will experience immediate relief from their pain issues.

It’s the chiropractor who is charged with deciding how, when, and where spinal traction therapy will be the treatment option of choice. They will typically choose this option when they believe that a particular patient will actually benefit from this form of treatment.

In regard to benefits, there are three very important ways that patients can derive benefits from spinal traction therapy.

1. The Process in Non-Invasive

Invasive medical surgical procedures come with significant risks. That includes the risks that are created when a patient needs to go under a general anesthetic. Since spinal traction therapy is non-invasive, it is something that can be handled on an outpatien6 basis, which eliminates the need for hospitalization.

2. Spinal Traction Therapy is a Natural Process

Not only is this process non-invasive, but it’s also natural. There is no need for patients to take any kind of medication before, during, or after the treatment process.

Since this is a natural process, it doesn’t create significant risks. To eliminate most risks, chiropractors will always start the overall treatment process by securing X-rays of the patient’s spine and neck areas. They use these X-rays To identify the source or sources of a patient’s pain. They do this to eliminate the possibility the pain is being caused by what the chiropractor would consider to be a significant medical or skeletal structural problem.

3. Little to No Recovery Time

When a patient submits to back surgery, they will surely encounter a lot of downtime because of the surgery. They might have a limited hospital stay and find themselves physically restricted while their surgical wound heals. After healing, most patients have to go through some form of physical therapy to help strengthen muscles that were damaged during surgery.

With spinal traction therapy, none of this is necessary. Immediately after undergoing a treatment session, patients are free to leave and permitted to move about as long as their movements don’t cause pain.
